What Slidell does to an air conditioner
Slidell started as a railroad camp in 1882 on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain. That location shapes how air conditioners fail here. Summers run long and humid, and the lake adds moisture and some salt to the air.
A typical system in town runs well over 2,000 hours a year. That steady load wears out capacitors and contactors first, which is why they top our repair list every summer. Drain lines stay wet for months, so algae clogs and float switch shutdowns come close behind.
Storms add a third layer. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina pushed a surge of more than 10 feet into parts of the city. Thousands of homes needed new equipment afterward. Systems from that rebuild are now near 20 years old, and many have reached the repair-or-replace point.

What we fix most in Slidell homes
These calls fill our schedule from May to September. Here is what usually sits behind each one.
AC runs but blows warm air
Usually a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor or low refrigerant. We test each one before replacing anything, because guessing gets expensive.
Outdoor unit hums but will not start
The compressor is trying to start without help from its capacitor. Turn the system off at the thermostat. Running it this way can overheat the compressor.
System shut off with water in the pan
A clogged condensate line tripped the float switch. We clear the line, treat it against algae and make sure the pan drains properly.
Ice on the copper lines
A frozen indoor coil comes from low airflow or low refrigerant. Switch the thermostat to Fan Only to thaw it, then call us to find the cause.
A leak that comes back every summer
Adding refrigerant without a repair only buys a few weeks. We find the leak with an electronic detector and quote the real fix.
Blank or unresponsive thermostat
A blank screen often means a tripped float switch, a blown low-voltage fuse or dead batteries. We trace the cause instead of swapping the thermostat.
What that noise or smell is telling you
Most AC failures give a warning first. Here is what common sounds and smells usually point to, and how fast to act.
A steady buzz from the outdoor unit
Often a stuck contactor or a weak capacitor. If the fan is not spinning, turn the system off at the thermostat and call.
Clicking, but nothing starts
Repeated clicks at the thermostat or air handler point to a relay, a low-voltage fault or a failing control board.
A squeal or grind when the fan runs
Worn motor bearings or a loose fan blade. Grinding means metal on metal, so shut the unit off before the motor seizes.
Hissing or bubbling near the lines
That can be refrigerant escaping through a leak. Low refrigerant freezes the coil and strains the compressor, so book a leak search.
A hot or burning smell
Overheated wiring or a motor close to failure. Switch the AC off at the breaker and leave it off until it is checked.
A musty smell at the vents
Standing water in the drain pan or mold on the coil. Slidell humidity builds this fast, and it often comes right before a drain clog.
What AC repair costs in Slidell
These are the ranges we see most often in Slidell homes. Your written price comes after testing and before any work.
| Repair | Typical price | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor replacement | $150 to $300 | Single or dual capacitor, and whether the fan motor is weak too |
| Contactor replacement | $150 to $350 | Burned contacts often come with heat-damaged wiring |
| Clogged drain line or float switch | $150 to $300 | Clearing the line only, or a new switch and pan treatment |
| Thermostat repair or replacement | $150 to $450 | A basic model, or a smart thermostat that needs a new wire |
| Outdoor fan motor | $350 to $650 | Motor size, and whether the fan blade is damaged |
| Indoor blower motor | $450 to $1,200 | A standard PSC motor or a variable-speed ECM motor |
| Refrigerant leak search and repair | $250 to $1,500 | Where the leak is and which refrigerant the system uses |
| Compressor or indoor coil | From about $800, often $1,500 or more | Warranty status, refrigerant type and system age |
Prices include parts and labor for a typical single-family home. A part still under the manufacturer's warranty can lower the cost, so keep your model and serial number handy.
A straight answer on repair or replace
When the decision is close, we give you both prices. This is the rule of thumb our technicians start from.
| System age | Small repair (capacitor, contactor, drain) | Major repair (compressor, coil) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8 years | Repair | Usually repair, and check the warranty first |
| 8 to 12 years | Repair | Compare both prices side by side |
| 12 years or more | Repair if the rest of the system is sound | Replacement usually costs less over time |
| Runs on R-22 | Repair small electrical faults | Replace |
Many systems carry a 10-year parts warranty if they were registered. A major repair on a newer unit may cost less than you expect. Sizing and new-system costs are on our AC installation and replacement page.
Which refrigerant your system uses
The refrigerant type changes the repair price, and sometimes the repair-or-replace answer. It is printed on the outdoor unit.
R-22, often called Freon
R-22 production in the United States ended in 2020. Only recycled supply is left, so each pound is costly. Small electrical repairs still make sense, but a major leak usually does not.
R-410A, often called Puron
Most Slidell systems run on R-410A, and it is still serviced. A federal phasedown is cutting supply, so the price keeps rising. Finding the leak matters more than refilling it.
R-454B and R-32
Many systems sold since 2025 use these lower-impact refrigerants. They need different tools and handling. Our technicians carry the gauges and leak detectors for both.
Read the outdoor unit label
The data plate on the side of the condenser lists the refrigerant and its factory charge. Send a photo of it when you book, and we bring the right parts.
What happens on a repair visit
Every Slidell repair call follows the same order, so nothing gets guessed or skipped.
Arrival window
We give you a window when you call, then a heads-up when the technician is on the way.
Ask and look
You tell us what the system did. We check the thermostat, filter, breaker and outdoor disconnect first.
Electrical tests
We measure the capacitor in microfarads, check the contactor and read the amp draw on each motor.
Refrigerant and airflow
Gauges read superheat and subcooling. We also measure the temperature drop across the coil, which should be about 15 to 20 degrees.
Written price
You get the cause, the fix and the price on paper. Work starts only after you approve it.
Repair and retest
After the repair we run the system, retest every reading and flush the drain line before we leave.
How we handle every service call
Written price before work
You see parts, labor and any refrigerant charge on paper. Nothing starts until you approve it, and financing is available for larger repairs.
One rate from 7am to 9pm
A Saturday evening visit costs the same as a Tuesday morning one. We never add an overtime charge.
Stocked trucks
Capacitors, contactors, hard-start kits, drain fittings and common motors ride on every truck. That is how 97% of our repairs finish on the first visit.
Every major brand
Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, Daikin, Bryant, American Standard, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu, whoever installed them.
After a storm, flood or power outage
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Slidell sits low along Lake Pontchartrain, so storms hit outdoor units hard. After Hurricane Ida in 2021, nearly 97,000 Cleco customers in St. Tammany Parish lost power.
Was the outdoor unit under water? Do not turn it on.
Flood water and mud get into the compressor, the fan motor and the controls. Running it can short the system or cause a shock. Leave the breaker off and have it inspected first.
Restarting after an outage
Voltage can spike when power comes back, and surges often kill capacitors and control boards. Turn the thermostat off during an outage. Switch it back on once power is steady.
Branches, leaves and siding
Wind packs debris into the coil fins and can bend the fan blade. Clear the area by hand with the power off. Never pressure wash the fins.
A unit knocked off level
A pad that shifts or settles can strain the copper lines and start a leak. If the unit leans or the lines look kinked, call before running it.
What to check before you hire anyone
These checks take five minutes and work for any AC company in Slidell, including us.
A Louisiana contractor license
Search the company by name on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors website. Larger HVAC jobs need a state mechanical license. Ask for proof of liability insurance too.
EPA 608 for refrigerant work
Federal law requires EPA 608 certification to buy or handle refrigerant. Any technician working on your refrigerant lines should be able to show the card.
A written price before work
A fair company tests first, then puts the price on paper. Be careful with anyone who quotes a full repair over the phone, before seeing the system.
No yearly top-offs
Refrigerant does not get used up. If someone adds it every summer without finding the leak, you are paying for the same problem again and again.

Slidell AC repair questions
How much does AC repair cost in Slidell?
A capacitor, the repair we make most often in Slidell, usually costs under $300. Contactors, fan motors, drain lines and thermostat faults fall between $150 and $650. A compressor or coil starts around $800 and can pass $1,500. The written price comes before any work.
Can a technician come today?
Most Slidell calls are scheduled the same day between 7am and 9pm. If the house has no cooling and someone at home is elderly, very young or medically fragile, tell us. That call moves up the list.
Is Aircendro a local company or a call center?
We are a Slidell HVAC contractor with an office at 2053 Gause Blvd E. When you call, you reach our team, and an Aircendro technician comes to your home.
Do evening and weekend visits cost more?
No. Every hour from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week, is billed at the same rate. There is no overtime charge.
Why does my AC keep tripping the breaker?
One trip can be a fluke. A second one points to a shorted compressor, a failing fan motor, a loose connection or a bad capacitor. Leave the breaker off after the second trip and call us, because repeated resets can damage the compressor.
Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Slidell?
Usually, yes. A full change-out needs a mechanical permit. Homes inside city limits get it from the City of Slidell, and homes outside them, such as Eden Isle, go through St. Tammany Parish. We confirm which applies and file it.
How long does an air conditioner last in Slidell?
Most central systems last 10 to 15 years here. Long cooling seasons, humidity and salt air near the lake push many toward the lower end. Yearly coil cleaning and drain care help a system reach the upper end.
