Smell gas or burning? Get safe first.

If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside. If you smell burning plastic or see smoke near the unit, switch it off at the breaker. Do not restart it. Call us once everyone is safe.

What counts as an emergency

When an AC problem cannot wait

In a Slidell summer, a house with no cooling can get dangerously hot within a few hours. That matters most for older adults, babies, pets and anyone with a heart or breathing condition. If the inside temperature is climbing past 85°F and someone at risk is home, call right away.

Other problems are emergencies because waiting makes them worse. Water pouring from the air handler can ruin a ceiling. A breaker that keeps tripping points to an electrical fault. A unit that hums but will not start can burn out its compressor if it keeps trying.

When you call, tell us who is home and what the system is doing. That is how we decide who goes first.

Before we arrive

Six things to check while you wait

These quick checks are safe for any homeowner. Sometimes one of them solves the problem before we get there.

Check the thermostat

Make sure it is set to Cool, the set point is below room temperature and the batteries are fresh.

Look at the breaker

If the AC breaker tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us.

Pull the filter

A filter packed with dust can freeze the coil and stop airflow. Replace it if you have a spare.

Look for ice

If the copper lines or indoor coil are iced over, switch the thermostat to Fan Only to start the thaw.

Stop the water

If water is leaking, turn the system off at the thermostat and soak up what you can.

Keep the house cool

Close blinds on sunny windows, run ceiling fans and drink water. Check on older neighbors too.

What we fix

The emergency repairs we make most

01Most common

Failed capacitor

The outdoor fan does not spin, or the unit hums and stops. A dead capacitor is the most common emergency we fix, and the part is on the truck.

02Electrical

Burned contactor or tripped breaker

Pitted contacts or loose wires can stop the condenser cold. We find the cause so the breaker does not trip again the next afternoon.

03Airflow

Frozen evaporator coil

Low airflow or low refrigerant turns the indoor coil into a block of ice. We thaw it safely, fix the cause and confirm the system cools again.

04Water

Overflowing drain pan

A clogged condensate line backs water into the pan and trips the float switch, or overflows into the ceiling. We clear it and treat the line.

05Refrigerant

Major refrigerant leak

If the system lost its charge, we locate the leak before recharging. Adding refrigerant without a repair just sends it back out.

06Motors

Seized fan or blower motor

A motor that will not turn stops all cooling. We carry common motors and can often replace them the same day.

Storms and floods

After a hurricane or high water

Do not restart

If the outdoor unit was underwater

Floodwater can damage the wiring, controls and compressor motor. Keep the power off and have it tested before it runs again. Slidell has seen this after storms from Katrina in 2005 to the hurricanes since.

Look first

If debris hit the unit

Bent fins, a dented cabinet or a cracked line set can all leak refrigerant. Clear loose branches by hand with the power off, then call us to check it.

Power surges

If the AC died when the power came back

The surge when power returns can kill a control board or contactor. A surge protector at the disconnect is an inexpensive way to prevent a repeat.

Generators

Running AC on a generator

Most portable generators cannot start a central AC compressor. Running one on a generator that is too small can damage both. Ask us before you try.

Questions

Emergency AC repair questions

What are your emergency service hours?

We take emergency calls and send technicians from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. There is no overtime charge for evenings or weekends.

What if my AC stops working after 9pm?

Call or email us, and we will contact you first thing at 7am to get you on the schedule. In the meantime, close blinds, run fans, drink water and check on anyone at risk. If someone shows signs of heat illness, call 911.

Do you charge extra for emergency calls?

No. You pay the same rate whether you call at 8am on a weekday or 8pm on a Sunday. Every repair is quoted in writing before we start.

Who gets priority when it is busy?

Homes with no cooling come first, and within those, homes with older adults, infants or someone with a medical condition. Tell us who is home when you call.

My AC is humming but the fan is not spinning. Should I keep it running?

No. Turn it off at the thermostat. A humming unit with a still fan usually has a failed capacitor, and running it can overheat the compressor. That repair is far cheaper than a compressor.

Is it safe to run my AC after a flood?

Not if the outdoor unit sat in water. Keep the breaker off until a technician tests the wiring and compressor. Restarting it too soon can turn a repair into a replacement.

Can you fix it on the first visit?

Most emergency repairs are fixed in one visit because we carry common parts like capacitors, contactors and fan motors. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you that day and give you a timeline.
