Why sizing matters

Bigger is not better in a humid climate

An air conditioner has two jobs in Slidell. It cools the air, and it pulls water out of it. A system that is too big cools the house fast and shuts off before it removes much moisture. The thermostat reads 74°F, but the house feels damp.

Many homes here had the old unit’s size copied onto the new one. If the house has since gained new windows, attic insulation or a closed-in porch, that number is now wrong. Some systems were oversized from the start.

So we run a Manual J load calculation before quoting. It accounts for square footage, insulation, window area, ceiling height and which way the house faces. The result gives us the right tonnage instead of a guess.

What a new system costs in Slidell

Most residential replacements in our area fall between $3,000 and $8,000. These are the factors that move the price.

Choosing equipment

Which system fits your home

Homes with gas heat

Central AC with a furnace

The right choice when the house already has a working furnace and sound ducts. We replace the outdoor unit and the matching indoor coil together so they work as a pair.

All-electric homes

Heat pump system

Cools in summer and heats in winter with one outdoor unit. Many Slidell homes already run one, and our heat pump page covers them in detail.

No ducts

Ductless mini-split

For additions, garages and older homes without room for ducts. Our mini-split page explains how the indoor heads work.

Efficiency

Single-stage or variable-speed

Single-stage units run at full power or not at all. Variable-speed units slow down and run longer, which removes more humidity. The extra cost pays back faster in homes that cool most of the year.

Installation day

What happens on installation day

Protect the house

We lay down floor covers and set up a clear path to the attic or closet.

Recover and remove

We recover the old refrigerant as EPA rules require and haul the old equipment away.

Set the new equipment

The outdoor unit goes on a level pad or raised stand, matched to the new indoor coil or air handler.

Vacuum and charge

We pull a deep vacuum on the lines, then charge the system by measurement.

Test and walk through

We check airflow, temperature split and the drain, then show you the thermostat and filter.

Before you buy

Four things to know about new systems in 2026

01Refrigerant

New systems use new refrigerants

Most new equipment now ships with R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A. These refrigerants need different tools and handling, and our technicians are trained on them.

02Efficiency rules

Louisiana’s minimum is 14.3 SEER2

Louisiana sits in the federal Southeast region. A new split AC under about 3.75 tons must rate at least 14.3 SEER2. Anything sold to you as new should meet it.

03Matched systems

Replace the indoor coil too

Pairing a new outdoor unit with an old indoor coil lowers efficiency and can affect the warranty. We quote matched systems by default.

04Warranty

Register the equipment on time

Most brands extend parts coverage to 10 years when the system is registered soon after installation. We give you the model and serial details you need to do it.

Questions

AC installation questions

How much does a new AC cost in Slidell?

Most residential replacements run $3,000 to $8,000. Size, efficiency, equipment type and duct work decide where your job lands. The free in-home estimate gives you a fixed written price.

How long does installation take?

Most replacements take one day. Jobs with duct changes, a new air handler location or a raised platform can take two. We tell you the timeline before we start.

What size AC do I need?

It depends on the house, not just the square footage. We run a Manual J load calculation that accounts for insulation, windows, ceiling height and orientation. Copying the old unit’s size is how many homes end up oversized.

Can I keep my existing ductwork?

Often, yes. We inspect the ducts during the estimate. If they are sized right and only leaking, we seal them. If they are crushed or too small, we tell you before you buy.

Do you pull permits for AC installation?

Yes. Every replacement is permitted through the City of Slidell or St. Tammany Parish, depending on your address, and inspected after installation.

Is there still a federal tax credit for a new AC?

No. The 25C credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. Ask your power company about any current rebates, and ask us about financing.

How soon can you install if my old system died?

For homes with no cooling, we offer same-day or next-day installs when the equipment is in stock. Homes with elderly residents or infants get the earliest slots.
