AC Maintenance in Slidell, LA Before the Heat Finds the Weak Part

A Slidell tune-up is more than a new filter. Salt air, humidity and long run hours wear systems out faster here, so we check the parts that fail first.

Why it matters here

Slidell systems wear out faster

A northern air conditioner might run 1,000 hours a year. A Slidell system runs more than twice that. Every one of those hours heats the capacitor, loads the compressor and pulls water through the drain line.

Then add the location. Homes near Lake Pontchartrain, Eden Isle and the marsh get salt and moisture on the outdoor coil. Humid summers grow algae in drain lines and mold on indoor coils. Spring pollen mats onto condenser fins.

Most of the breakdowns we fix in July started as small problems in April. A dirty coil, a weak capacitor or a half-blocked drain is cheap to fix during a tune-up. The same problem on the hottest afternoon of the year costs far more.

What we do

What a Slidell tune-up includes

Every maintenance visit covers the same core checks. You get a written report of what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.

Clean the outdoor coil

We rinse the condenser from the inside out to push pollen, dirt and salt film out of the fins.

Clear the drain line

We flush the condensate line and treat it to slow algae growth, then test the float switch.

Test the electrical parts

We measure the capacitor against its rating and check the contactor and wiring for heat damage.

Check the refrigerant

We read system pressures and temperatures to confirm the charge is right, without adding refrigerant blindly.

Inspect the indoor side

We look at the evaporator coil, blower wheel and drain pan for dirt, rust and mold.

Test the controls

We confirm the thermostat, safety switches and heating mode all work before the season changes.

Local wear

What we watch for around Slidell

01Lake and marsh

Coil corrosion

Salt film on coils near the water speeds up pitting and pinhole leaks. Regular rinsing slows it. On replacement, coated coils are worth asking about.

02Humidity

Algae in the drain line

A Slidell AC can pull gallons of water from the air each day. Algae grows in that line all summer. Treating it in spring prevents most float switch shutdowns.

03Hurricane season

Pre-storm checks

We confirm the unit is level, secured to its pad and on a working disconnect. After a storm, we check for debris, water damage and surge damage before restart.

04Heating season

Heat strips and heat pumps

A fall visit tests electric heat strips and heat pump defrost. Cold snaps are short here, but a failed heat strip on a 30°F night is a long one.

Do not wait

Signs your AC needs service before spring

Sound

New buzzing, clicking or rattling

A buzz at startup often means a weak capacitor or a failing contactor. A rattle can be a loose fan blade or panel. Both are cheap to fix early.

Comfort

Longer run times than last year

If the system runs much longer to hold the same temperature, the coil may be dirty or the charge may be low.

Water

Water in the pan or a wet ceiling spot

Standing water in the drain pan means the line is starting to clog. Clearing it now avoids a float switch shutdown in July.

Air

Musty smell when the system starts

A musty smell points to moisture or mold on the indoor coil or in the drain pan. We clean it and look for the cause.

Questions

AC maintenance questions

How often should I have my AC serviced in Slidell?

Twice a year is best: once in spring before cooling season and once in fall before heating season. Systems here run more than twice as many hours as systems up north, so once a year is the minimum.

Can I just change the filter myself instead?

Changing the filter is important and you should keep doing it. It does not clean the outdoor coil, test the capacitor, check the refrigerant or clear the drain line. Those are the parts that cause most summer breakdowns.

How long does a tune-up take?

Most single-system visits take about an hour. Homes with two systems or a heavily dirty coil take longer. We tell you if we find anything before we leave.

Will you add refrigerant during maintenance?

Only if the measurements show the system is low, and we will explain why. A properly sealed system should not lose refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak, and topping it off without finding the leak only delays the problem.

Is maintenance worth it on an old system?

Yes, and often more so. Older systems have more worn parts. A tune-up can catch a failing capacitor or blocked drain before it causes a breakdown. It also gives you a clear picture before you decide on replacement.

Do you service heat pumps and furnaces too?

Yes. The fall visit checks heat pump defrost and reversing valves, electric heat strips and gas furnace burners and safety controls.

My house is near the water. Does that change anything?

It means your outdoor coil sees more salt and moisture, so coil cleaning matters more. We pay extra attention to corrosion on lakefront and Eden Isle homes and tell you how the coil is holding up.
