One outdoor unit, a head in each room
A mini-split has an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads mounted on a wall or ceiling. Copper lines, a drain line and a power cable connect them through a small hole in the wall. There is no ductwork at all.
Each head has its own thermostat, so every room can be set to a different temperature. The outdoor unit uses a variable-speed compressor that slows down instead of cycling on and off. That keeps the temperature steady and handles humidity well.
Every mini-split is a heat pump, so it also heats in winter. For Slidell’s short, mild cold snaps, that is usually all a room needs.

Where a mini-split makes the most sense
Olde Towne cottages and shotguns
Pier-and-beam homes with no attic leave nowhere to run ducts. Mini-splits need only a small wall opening, and the outdoor unit can sit in the rear yard. Our Olde Towne page explains the preservation review.
Rooms the central system cannot reach
Tying a new room into old ductwork often starves the rest of the house. A single-zone mini-split cools the addition on its own without stealing air from other rooms.
Workshops, gyms and garage offices
Garages in Slidell can pass 100°F in summer. A mini-split cools the space only when you use it, without adding load to the house system.
Bonus rooms and upstairs bedrooms
A room over the garage or under a hot roof can stay warm even with a working central AC. A mini-split head fixes that one room without replacing the whole system.
Mini-split or central air?
| Single-zone mini-split | Multi-zone mini-split | Central ducted AC | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | One room or addition | Several rooms, no ducts | Whole house with good ducts |
| Ductwork needed | None | None | Yes, in attic or under floor |
| Temperature control | One room | Each room separately | Whole house or by zone |
| Duct losses | None | None | 20 to 30 percent if ducts leak |
| Install disruption | About a day | One to a few days | Depends on duct work |
Price depends on the number of heads, line set length, electrical work and wall construction. We visit, measure and give you a written quote. Need whole-house cooling instead? See AC installation in Slidell.
How we install a mini-split
Size each room
We calculate the load for each room so heads are not oversized, which causes damp air.
Plan the placement
We pick head and outdoor unit locations for airflow, drainage and looks.
Run the lines
We drill one small opening per head and run copper, drain and power through a covered line set.
Power and pressure test
We wire the dedicated circuit, pressure test the lines and pull a vacuum before releasing refrigerant.
Start up and teach
We test each head and show you the remote, modes and filter cleaning.
Already have a mini-split? We fix those too
Head blinking an error code
Mini-splits report faults with blinking lights or codes. We read the code for your brand and test the sensor, board or motor it points to.
Head dripping water
Usually a clogged drain line or a head that is not level. Slidell humidity pushes a lot of water through these small drains.
Musty smell from the head
Mold grows on the blower wheel inside the head when filters go uncleaned. We deep clean the coil and wheel.
Running but not cooling
Low refrigerant from a flare leak, a dirty outdoor coil or a failed inverter board. We test before we replace anything.
Ductless mini-split questions
How much does a mini-split cost to install in Slidell?
It depends on how many heads you need and how far the outdoor unit sits from them. Electrical work and wall type matter too. A single-zone system costs far less than a multi-zone one. We give you a written quote after a site visit.
Do mini-splits work in Louisiana humidity?
Yes, when they are sized correctly. Their variable-speed compressors run longer at low speed, which pulls more moisture from the air. An oversized head is the main cause of damp rooms, which is why we size each one.
Can a mini-split heat my home in winter?
Yes. Every mini-split is a heat pump. For Slidell’s mild winters and short cold snaps, it heats a room without any backup heat in most cases.
Can I put a mini-split in a historic Olde Towne home?
Usually, yes. They need only a small wall opening and the outdoor unit can sit in the rear yard. Exterior changes in the preservation district may need review, and we prepare the details for that.
How often do mini-splits need cleaning?
Rinse the head filters about once a month during heavy use. Have the coil, blower wheel and drain cleaned once a year. Skipping that is the main cause of smells and leaks.
Do you repair mini-splits you did not install?
Yes. We repair Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG and other major brands. Tell us the brand and the error code or blinking pattern when you call.
Does a mini-split need its own electrical circuit?
Yes. The outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect. We check your panel during the visit and include any electrical work in the quote.
